1. DHA/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE
IN DJIBOUTI REPORTS THAT DROUGHT SITUATION HAS BEEN IMPROVING. RAINS FELL
IN AFFECTED REGIONS IN SOUTH AND WEST OF COUNTRY.
2. IN RESPONSE TO GOVT APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE, DHA CHANNELLED USD 20,000 CONTRIBUTION OF NIPPON FOUNDATION (JAPANESE NGO), WHICH IS BEING USED TO PROVIDE VETERINARY MEDICINES FOR LIVESTOCK IN AFFECTED AREAS.
3. GENERALLY, EMERGENCY NEEDS HAVE BEEN MOSTLY COVERED.
4. WFP ADDS, HOWEVER, THAT THERE STILL EXISTS SHORTFALL IN FOOD NEEDS (1,150 TONS OF CEREALS) AND ENCOURAGES DONORS TO ASSIST BILATERALLY.
5. UNICEF REPORTS PERSISTENT CONCERN ABOUT NUTRITIONAL SITUATION OF CHILDREN AND PREGNANT WOMEN. DESPITE RAINS, WATER SUPPLY HAS NOT IMPROVED, AS THERE ARE NO CATCHMENT SYSTEMS IN PLACE. UNICEF, THEREFORE, STRESSES NEEDS FOR ASSISTANCE IN THERAPEUTIC AND SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING AND PORTABLE WATER SUPPLY. RECOVERY PROGRAM IN THESE SECTORS, TARGETING MALNOURISHED UNDER-FIVE CHILDREN AND PREGNANT AND BREAST-FEEDING MOTHERS, IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSIDERATION.
6. IN AREA OF POST-RELIEF NEEDS, DHA'S DISASTER MITIGATION BRANCH HAS STARTED CONSULTING WITH SPECIALIZED AGENCIES/ORGANIZATIONS WITH A VIEW TO ASSISTING GOVT IN NATURAL DISASTER REDUCTION, INCLUDING DROUGHT.
7. THIS IS LAST SITUATION REPORT ON EMERGENCY PHASE OF THIS DISASTER, UNLESS THERE ARE UNFORESEEN DEVELOPMENTS.
